The secretary general of Association of Local Governments of Nigeria
(ALGON), Chief Chikwe Udensi yesterday emerged the Progressive Peoples’
Alliance (PPA) governorship candidate for Abia State.
The emergence of Chief Udensi, a former All Progressives Grand Alliance
(APGA) gubernatorial aspirant in Abia State was sequel to the withdrawal of
two other aspirants, Chiefs Ndukwe Iko and Anya Kalu Anya.
When the state chairman of the party, Prince Emeka Okafor called out the
names of the aspirants and asked them to address the mammoth crowd that
thronged the venue of the congress, both Iko and Anya took the micro phone
to announce their withdrawal from the race, leaving Chief Udensi as the
sole candidate.
The delegates drawn from the 17 Local Governments of the state were later
to endorse the candidature of Udensi in an overwhelming voice vote in the
presence of officials of the Independent Electoral Commission who witnesses
the conduct of the congress.
In his acceptance speech, Chief Udensi, overwhelmed with joy said with his
emergence as the PPA flag bearer, that the battle had just began for the
party to retake Abia state which he said PDP took in error.
He promised that the journey which the PPA started for the emancipation of
Abia from what he described as the forces of darkness would be completed
under his watch.
“Gov Theodore Orji should start preparing his handover note which I will be
taking come May 29, 2015 because PPA is going to take over Abia from the
PDP and we are going to right the wrongs they did in the state”, he told
the over joyous crowd.
He said that the people of the state are not happy with the PDP government
in the state, stressing that the people would show their anger in 2015 with
their votes.
He warned against any attempt to rig next year’s election in the state,
stating that the people would resist this.
Udensi thanked Iko and Anya for withdrawing from the race in the interest
of the party, saying that what the two former aspirants did was worthy of
emulation. He promised to work closely with them.
Iko who withdrew from the race last minute said he would now vie for the
House of Representatives seat for Arochukwu/Ohafia federal constituency
from where he believed to represent his people better.
Immediately Udensi’s victory filtered into Aba, the city was in jubilant
mood as people expressed happiness over the PPA’s choice.
Those who spoke with our correspondent said their joy stemmed from the fact
that it was under a PPA government in the state that most of the roads in
Aba were reconstructed and expressed optimism that another PPA government
under Udensi would bring back the lost glory of the city.
